Land of the kings

Rajasthan is without any doubt the most scenic and colorful part of India. Rajasthan, literally meaning ”The Land of the Kings”, is situated in Thar-dessert in the North-Western corner of India and harsh dessert landscape is dotted with old fortresses and is an ideal setting for an unforgettable motorcycle adventure.

We ride Classic Royal Enfield 500cc motorcycles in remote areas, where tribesman and nomads live as if they have been untouched be modernity. The journey includes tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park and a visit to the world-famous mausoleum Taj Mahal. 

Throughout the motorbike tour we will be staying in old palaces which has been converted in to fine hotels.

 ITINERARY

Day 01: Delhi to Mandawa. Distance 180 km

In the morning, we will be picked up by a minibus and drive out of the city. Once we have left the chaotic traffic in Delhi, we will reach the place where the bikes are parked. From there we will start riding towards to the hotel in the small town of Mandawa, which is situated in the Eastern part of Rajasthan. The area is primarily farmland and crops so as mustard, wheat and sugar cane are grown in this region. The local people are dressed in traditional clothes; the women are dressed in colorful dresses and the men are wearing big turbans. The small and sleepy town of Mandawa is known for its many Havelies, old traditional mansions, with colorful wall paintings. We will take plenty of time to stop at the roadside and have a taste of the local chai, Indian hot tea with spices, milk and sugar, and there will be time to take plenty of photographs of the idyllic Indian village scenery.

Day 02: Exploring the area around the town of Mandawa

This day is dedicated to riding around on the smale country lanes and explore the area around Mandawa and to get close to traditional village life. We will also explore some of the old and charming Havelies – traditional Indian Mansions. There will also be time to hear more about the history of this charming part of India.

Day 03: Drive to Bikaner. Distance 195 km

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we will get back on to our motorbikes and aim for the North-Western corner of Rajasthan, where the city of Bikaner is situated. Bikaner has a charming old city center with narrow streets, Hindu temples, buzzing bazaars and an old majestic fortresses. There will be plenty of time to explore the city of Bikaner and learn more about the Maharajahs and Maharanis, the Indian kings and queens, who used to govern this region.

Day 04: Bikaner to Jaiselmer Distance 330 km

This day we will drive to the very frontier of Rajasthan. Our aim is the 800 year old fortress of Jaisalmer, which is the only fortress in India that is still inhabited. On our ride to Jaisalmer we will face very little traffic and there are changes to spot wild antelopes and deer along the road side. The great fortress of Jaisalmer will rise from the dessert at the end of the day as we approach our hotel. We will spend two nights at this enchanting spot in the Thar-dessert.

Day 05: Sightseeing at Jaiselmer and optional camel safari

Together we will explore explore the ancient fortress of Jaisalmer where Hindu and Jain temples are scattered among local houses and luxuries Havelies. Jaisalmer dates back to 1100 BC and used to be an important stop over for the many camel caravans who carried goods so as silk, gold and spices from Asia to the Mediterranean sea. After lunch we will get on to our motor bikes and drive West of the town to see sand dunes and camels. As the sun starts sinking we will ride back to the hotel.

There is an optional camel safari and camping out at in the dessert. This is not included in the price of the motorcycle trip.

Day 06: Jaisalmer to Jodhpur. Distance 305 km

We will start riding east towards the city of Jodhpur, where 850.000 people live. Again we will find very little traffic on the roads as we ride through the Thar Dessert, passing traditional villages and dry mountains before we approach the city of Jodhpur – also known as the blue city. Above the city of Jodhpur lies the majestic Mahrengha fortress, which earlier used to be the residence of the Maharaja of Jodhpur. we will explore the Mahrengha fortress this afternoon if we reach in time – otherwise we will visit the fortress the next day before leaving for Pushkar.

Day 07: Jodhpur to Pushkar. Distance 215 km

Next stop on our motorcycle journey is the secret town of Pushkar. At the center of Pushkar lies a holy lake, where Hindu pilgrims take ritual baths and worship the Hindu God, Brahma – the creator of the Universe. We will spend two nights in Pushkar, so there will be plenty of time to explore the town, the bazaar and the sights.

Day 08: Sightseeing in Pushkar and ride around the scenic country side

This day we will explore Pushkar, the bazaar and the temples by foot. Later we will get on to our bikes and drive around the landscape on the small country roads and visit some of the local villages to see the traditional farm life.

Day 09: Pushkar to Ranthamboure Distance 270 km

We will be riding towards to eastern part of Rajasthan where the landscape it is more green and lush then what we have seen at the area around Bikaner and Jaisalmer. Our aim is the National Park of Ranthamboure, home to the Bengali Tiger. The next day is dedicated to safari at the best place of tiger spotting in all of India: Ranthamboure National Park.

We will be spending the night at a resort near the National Park.

Day 10: In Ranthamboure Tiger Safari

Rise and shine for an early morning jeep safari at the Ranthamboure National Park – home to crocodiles, deer, gazelles, antelopes, bears, snakes, peacocks, monkeys, leopards and several hundred different bird species. Ranthamboure is also the best place in India to spot the rare Royal Bengal Tiger in its natural habitat. The National Park hosts around 35 tigers and we will spend the first part of the safari searching for the King of the Jungle.

Breakfast will be served back at the resort, when the early morning safari is over and in the afternoon we will venture out on yet a safari at the National Park.

There is no scheduled motorcycle riding this day.

Day 11: Ranthambhore to Bharatpur 230 km

This is our last ride and we will be going through the Eastern part of Rajasthan to Bharatpur where we will celebrate that we have completed a motorcycle adventure through Rajasthan – The Land of Kings.

Day 12: Early morning. Drive to Agra in a minibus to see Taj Mahal and the Red Fort

After breakfast we will be picked up by a mini bus that will drive us the city of Agra, which was the capital og India during the time of the Great Mughals Kings. The Mughals came to India from Central Asia in the early fifteen hundred and ruled for more than 300 years. Their presence had a large impact on Indian society, art and architecture. Our first stop is at the Agra Fort, a magnificent palace and previous home to the Emperor and his family. The Great Mughals had several enemies and the entire palace is surrounded by a large wall made out of red sandstone. After lunch we will visit the Taj Mahal, which is featured on the list of the Seven New World Wonders. Taj Mahal was completed in 1653 and it took 22,000 thousand labours and 22 years to complete it. The beautiful Taj Mahal was built by the Great Mughal Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died during childbirth at a young age.

After an exciting visit to Agra we will drive back to Delhi by train or bus where we will have the farewell dinner. After the farewell dinner we will leave for the airport and our journey ends.
